FAQs
What is pediatric occupational therapy?
Occupational therapy (OT) helps people with their daily occupations, whether that be productivity, leisure, or self-care. OTs help children develop the skills they need to participate in everyday activities, like getting dressed, playing, writing, following routines, and managing big feelings. It’s a fun and supportive way to build independence and confidence through play and connection.
What kinds of goals can OT help with?
OTs can support children in a variety of goals, such as:
- Emotional regulation
- Transitions and routines
- Sensory processing
- Fine motor skills (ex. holding a pencil, writing, using scissors, using cutlery)
- Gross motor skills and coordination (ex. balance, core strength)
- Visual-motor skills (ex. hand-eye-coordination)
- Independence in daily tasks (ex. dressing, toileting)
- Executive functioning
What ages do you work with?
We work with children ages 2-18. If your child falls outside that range and you’re interested in support, please feel free to reach out, We’re happy to discuss if we’re able to support your needs or help you find additional resources.
Do I need a referral to OT?
No referral needed! You can contact us directly to discuss any questions, book a free discovery call, or to schedule an initial assessment. If your child has other professionals involved (ex. pediatrician, teacher, or SLP), we’re happy to collaborate with them as needed.
What does a typical OT session look like?
Each session is tailored to your child’s goals, interests, and needs. Sessions are play-based, engaging, and supportive – whether we’re working on calming strategies, developing motor skills, or navigating tricky routines. We also provide strategies and ideas to carry over at home between sessions.
Where do sessions take place?
We currently offer sessions in-home and virtually in London, Ontario, Canada, and surrounding areas. We’ll work with you to choose the best setting for your child’s goals and learning needs.
Are services covered by insurance? What are your fees?
Many private insurance plans in Ontario cover occupational therapy provided by a registered OT. We recommend checking with your provider to confirm your coverage. We provide detailed receipts that you can submit for reimbursement to insurance, OAP funding, or another applicable funding source.
Please contact for fees.
How do I get started?
Start by reaching out through our Contact page or by emailing cora@handandheartkidsot.ca. We offer a free 15-minute consultation to discuss your concerns and to see if we’re a good fit. From there, an initial assessment is required before progressing with treatment sessions. After the initial assessment, we will agree on goals and a treatment plan, and continue with sessions if indicated by the initial assessment.
