Play-based occupational therapy session in London, Ontario

What is Pediatric Occupational Therapy?

Supporting Children’s Development Through Play and Purpose

Pediatric occupational therapy (often called pediatric OT) is a type of therapy that helps children develop the skills they need for everyday activities at home, at school, and in their community. At Hand and Heart Kid’s Occupational Therapy, we support children in London, Ontario with hands-on, play-based strategies that are personalized to the needs of each child and family. We look at how components of the child, environment, and occupation overlap to enable meaningful participation in their goals.

But what exactly does that mean?

A pediatric occupational therapist works with children to build skills in areas such as:

  • Fine motor skills (like writing, pencil grasp, cutting with scissors, and cutlery use)
  • Dressing (zippers, buttons, shoe laces, and coats)
  • Gross motor coordination (such as balance and core strength)
  • Emotional regulation
  • Sensory processing
  • Attention and executive functioning
  • Daily routines and transitions (such as participating in morning and evening routines)
  • Self care tasks (including toileting, bathing, and dressing)
  • Play and social interaction

We focus on what matters most to your child and your family, whether it’s managing transitions, getting dressed independently, or feeling more confident at school.

Why Might a Child Need Occupational Therapy?

Every child develops at their own pace. But if you notice challenges that affect your child’s ability to learn, play, or participate in everyday life, occupational therapy can help.

You might consider pediatric OT if your child:

  • Has difficulty with handwriting or using scissors
  • Struggles with attention, routines, or transitions
  • Is sensitive to noise, textures, or movement
  • Finds certain self-care tasks frustrating
  • Has trouble with social play or emotional regulation

We believe in meeting each child where they’re at and helping them thrive in their own unique way.

How Does Pediatric OT Work?

At Hand and Heart Kid’s OT, sessions are:

  • Play-based: We use toys, games, and creative activities to support developmental goals
  • Family-centered: We work closely with you to support carryover at home and in daily routines
  • Strengths-based: Therapy is built around your child’s interests and strengths
  • Goal-oriented: we ensure that each activity relates to the child’s ultimate goal

Every session is grounded in relationship and connection because we know kids learn best when they feel safe, understood, and empowered.
